Dans le cadre du Diplôme Universitaire (DU) d’Échographie Obstétricale et Gynécologique, M. Mario Gharib, Team Leader au Centre de l’Innovation Numérique et de l’Intelligence Artificielle (CINIA) de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ), a assuré deux sessions de formation intitulées “General Introduction to AI – Understanding AI: Foundations, Applications, and Implications in Midwifery”, le vendredi 8 mai 2026, de 14h00 à 16h30.

Ces sessions ont réuni sept sages-femmes professionnelles dans une démarche visant à mieux comprendre les transformations engendrées par l’intelligence artificielle dans le domaine de la santé et, plus particulièrement, dans la pratique de la maïeutique.

La formation a proposé une introduction globale à l’intelligence artificielle, en retraçant son évolution et en présentant ses principaux concepts, notamment le Machine Learning, le Deep Learning, l’intelligence artificielle générative ainsi que les Large Language Models (LLMs). Les participantes ont également découvert les multiples applications de l’IA dans le secteur de la santé, telles que l’imagerie médicale, la robotique ou encore les assistants virtuels, et leur impact sur l’amélioration de la détection précoce, la personnalisation des soins et l’efficacité opérationnelle.

Un accent particulier a été mis sur le prompt engineering, afin de permettre aux participantes de mieux interagir avec les systèmes d’intelligence artificielle et d’en optimiser les usages dans un contexte professionnel. La formation a également abordé la notion d’IA agentique (Agentic AI), mettant en lumière la capacité de certains systèmes à agir de manière autonome pour soutenir les flux de travail cliniques et les processus décisionnels.

Enfin, les sessions ont permis d’ouvrir une réflexion sur les enjeux éthiques liés à l’usage de l’intelligence artificielle dans le domaine de la santé, notamment les biais algorithmiques, la transparence, la confidentialité des données, la responsabilité ainsi que le consentement des patients. Les échanges ont souligné l’importance d’une utilisation critique, responsable et éthique de ces technologies dans les pratiques de soins.

Les retours des participantes ont été particulièrement positifs, soulignant la pertinence des thématiques abordées, la qualité des échanges ainsi que l’importance croissante de l’intelligence artificielle dans les pratiques de santé. Les sages-femmes ont notamment apprécié l’approche accessible et concrète de la formation, qui leur a permis de mieux comprendre les opportunités, les limites et les enjeux éthiques liés à l’intégration de l’IA dans leur domaine professionnel.

À travers cette initiative, le CINIA poursuit sa mission d’accompagnement des professionnels et des communautés académiques dans l’adoption réfléchie des technologies émergentes et dans le développement des compétences numériques liées à l’intelligence artificielle.

As part of the University Diploma (DU) in Obstetrical and Gynecological Ultrasound, Mr. Mario Gharib, Team Leader at the Center for Digital Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (CINIA) at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ), delivered two training sessions entitled “General Introduction to AI – Understanding AI: Foundations, Applications, and Implications in Midwifery” on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

These sessions brought together seven professional midwives in an initiative aimed at better understanding the transformations driven by artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector, and more specifically in midwifery practice.

The training provided a comprehensive introduction to artificial intelligence by tracing its evolution and presenting its key concepts, including Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Generative AI, and Large Language Models (LLMs). Participants also explored the numerous applications of AI in healthcare, such as medical imaging, robotics, and virtual assistants, as well as their impact on improving early detection, personalized care, and operational efficiency.

Particular emphasis was placed on prompt engineering, enabling participants to better interact with artificial intelligence systems and optimize their use in a professional context. The training also introduced the concept of Agentic AI, highlighting the ability of certain systems to act autonomously in supporting clinical workflows and decision-making processes.

Finally, the sessions opened a discussion on the ethical challenges related to the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, including algorithmic bias, transparency, data privacy, accountability, and patient consent. The discussions emphasized the importance of a critical, responsible, and ethical use of these technologies in healthcare practices.

Participants’ feedback was highly positive, highlighting the relevance of the topics addressed, the quality of the discussions, and the growing importance of artificial intelligence in healthcare practices. The midwives particularly appreciated the accessible and practical approach of the training, which enabled them to better understand the opportunities, limitations, and ethical considerations related to the integration of AI into their professional field.

Through this initiative, CINIA continues its mission of supporting professionals and academic communities in the thoughtful adoption of emerging technologies and in the development of digital skills related to artificial intelligence.
