In 2026, as part of a final-year engineering project jointly supervised by the School of Engineering of Beirut (ESIB) and the Center for Digital Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (CINIA), an AI-powered Moodle plugin was developed to enhance student support and strengthen assessment practices.
The initiative forms part of Saint Joseph University of Beirut’s (USJ) broader digital transformation strategy, which seeks to integrate artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, and educational innovation. It also reflects CINIA’s commitment to engaging students as active contributors to the University’s digital transformation by involving them in the design of solutions that address real educational needs.
Context-Aware Artificial Intelligence for Learning
While generative AI tools provide rapid access to information, their responses remain largely generic and are rarely aligned with the pedagogical context of a specific course. They do not know what has actually been taught, which learning resources have been selected by the instructor, or the intended learning outcomes of the course.
Although students may improve the relevance of these tools by uploading course materials—with their instructor’s permission—this remains an individual experience. Instructors receive no insight into the questions being asked, the misconceptions students may have, or the concepts requiring further clarification.
Seamlessly Integrated into Moodle
USJ Smart Tutor addresses this challenge through native integration within the University’s Moodle platform. Rather than relying on general knowledge, the assistant generates responses exclusively from the learning materials validated by the instructor and the content of the course in which the student is enrolled.
Students therefore receive guidance that is fully aligned with their course, while instructors retain complete control over the knowledge base used by the system.
The plugin also provides instructors with an analytical dashboard that highlights the topics generating the greatest number of student questions. By identifying concepts that appear to challenge a significant proportion of the class, it offers early pedagogical insights and supports timely instructional intervention.
AI Designed to Empower Teaching
USJ Smart Tutor is not intended to replace instructors, nor to compete with general-purpose AI assistants. Its purpose is to extend learning beyond the classroom by providing students with reliable, course-specific support whenever they need it.
By combining contextualized AI tutoring with learning analytics for instructors, the project strengthens student engagement, promotes more personalized learning, and demonstrates how artificial intelligence can be deployed responsibly to enhance teaching while preserving the central role of the educator.
