Le 15 mai 2025, la Faculté de médecine dentaire de l’Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth (USJ) a accueilli une journée visionnaire intitulée « AI in Healthcare », réunissant chercheurs, cliniciens et experts en technologies émergentes autour des enjeux actuels et futurs de l’intelligence artificielle dans le domaine de la santé.

À cette occasion, Madame Wadad Wazen Gergy, Directrice du Centre de l’innovation et de l’intelligence artificielle (CINIA) de l’USJ, est intervenue dans le cadre du panel “Present and Future of AI in Healthcare”. Son intervention, intitulée « From Awareness to Action: AI at Saint Joseph University of Beirut », a retracé la stratégie audacieuse et humaine que l’USJ a adoptée face à l’émergence de l’IA.

De la prise de conscience à l’action : une réponse universitaire structurée

Dans un exposé riche, Madame Wazen Gergy a partagé le chemin parcouru par l’USJ depuis l’arrivée de ChatGPT en janvier 2023. Elle a démontré comment l’université a rapidement réagi avec rigueur et responsabilité : sensibilisation de la communauté académique, création d’une Commission universitaire sur l’IA et la stratégie numérique, développement d’une culture de confiance numérique, et lancement d’initiatives interdisciplinaires concrètes.

À travers le CINIA, l’université a mis en place des dispositifs d’accompagnement, de veille technologique et de formation, rendant l’IA accessible à l’ensemble de ses composantes, et pas seulement aux spécialistes. Cette approche inclusive s’est traduite notamment par la création du Diplôme universitaire « AI for Everyone », qui a permis à des professionnels issus de domaines aussi variés que la santé, l’éducation ou l’ingénierie de se former aux fondamentaux de l’intelligence artificielle.

Une vision éthique et humaine de l’innovation

Fidèle à la mission de l’USJ, Madame Wazen Gergy a souligné que l’intégration de l’IA ne peut se faire qu’en gardant l’humain au centre des décisions. Éthique, équité, transparence et collaboration interdisciplinaire sont les piliers de la transformation numérique qu’elle défend. L’IA ne doit pas remplacer le jugement professionnel, mais l’enrichir. Elle a ainsi lancé un appel clair : « Investissez dans vos équipes, formez-les, donnez-leur les clés de la transition, et surtout, restez humains. »

From Awareness to Action: A Structured University Response

In a compelling presentation, Mrs. Wazen Gergy shared the journey USJ has taken since the emergence of ChatGPT in January 2023. She explained how the university responded swiftly and responsibly: raising awareness within the academic community, establishing a university-wide Commission on AI and Digital Strategy, fostering a culture of digital trust, and launching concrete interdisciplinary initiatives.

Through CINIA, the university has implemented support mechanisms, technological monitoring, and training programs, making AI accessible to the entire USJ community—not just to specialists. This inclusive approach was notably embodied in the creation of the university diploma « AI for Everyone », which enabled professionals from diverse fields such as healthcare, education, and engineering to be trained in the fundamentals of artificial intelligence.

An Ethical and Human-Centered Vision of Innovation

True to the mission of USJ, Mrs. Wazen Gergy emphasized that AI integration must be grounded in human-centered decision-making. Ethics, equity, transparency, and interdisciplinary collaboration are the cornerstones of the digital transformation she advocates. AI should not replace professional judgment—but rather, enrich it. She concluded with a clear call to action:
“Invest in your teams, train them, give them the tools for this transition—and above all, stay human.”
