The 14th edition of the Research Days was held at Saint Joseph University of Beirut on June 22nd and 23rd, 2023. The event focused on the theme of "Research in the Service of Society in Crisis-Stricken Lebanon." One of the presentations at the event was given by Mrs. Wadad Wazen Gergy and Pr. Dany Mezher. They spoke about the contribution of artificial intelligence (AI) to research in various fields of study.
Mrs. Wazen Gergy, who is the head of the Educational New Technologies Unit, stressed the importance of digital skills for researchers in the era of AI. She said that AI-based tools can transform a researcher's workflow by providing more efficient means to explore, analyze, and synthesize data. Mrs. Wazen Gergy then presented a number of AI tools that are classified according to their domain: research and correction, research design, academic writing, and academic publication. She explained how these tools can be used to accelerate analyses, detect complex patterns in massive datasets, and generate promising hypotheses for future studies.
However, Mrs. Wazen Gergy also underlined the challenges researchers face when integrating AI into their work. Among these challenges are ethical questions related to data usage, plagiarism, and copyright in academic writing, as well as publication policies.
In conclusion, Mrs. Wazen Gergy's intervention at the Research Days of Saint Joseph University of Beirut shed light on the exciting possibilities offered by AI in the field of academic research, while also acknowledging the challenges that need to be addressed.
