On Wednesday March 15, 2023, The New Educational Technologies Unit (UNTE) organized its fifth EduTech Cafe meeting on the theme "What is The Place of ChatGPT in Higher Education?". This remote exchange event was moderated by Ms. Wadad Wazen Gergy, Head of the UNTE, in the presence of 50 participants from the University community: deans, directors, professors, teachers and USJ staff members.
Il s’agit d’une heure d’échange entre les enseignants des différentes institutions de l’USJ durant laquelle chacun a partage son expérience avec le nouvel outil basé sur l’intelligence artificielle : le ChatGPT. Les participants ont exploré le potentiel de l’intelligence artificielle dans le domaine de l’éducation, ses forces, ses faiblesses, ses risques, ses opportunités et ses applications dans les différentes disciplines. Ils ont discuté de sujets tels que la façon dont l’IA peut être utilisée pour améliorer les performances des étudiants, comment elle peut soutenir l’apprentissage personnalisé et créer des systèmes d’apprentissage plus efficaces et efficients.
Les participants ont discuté des risques et des défis de l’intégration de l’IA dans les systèmes éducatifs existants et de l’importance de l’éthique, telles que les préoccupations en matière de confidentialité, des droits d’auteur et de la crédibilité des données. Les questions portaient sur la façon dont l’IA peut être intégrée en classe pour améliorer l’apprentissage, par exemple à travers des expériences d’apprentissage personnalisées ou des évaluations alternatives.
ChatGPT can also write good correspondence, serve as a research assistant and solve problems in mathematics, coding, develop case studies, etc. However, teachers and students are responsible for ascertaining the information and requesting the resources on which the tool was based. Moreover, teachers will have to revisit their courses to stay up to date with the fairly rapid technological development and review work and assessment methods.
En conclusion, l’intelligence artificielle offre une occasion unique de révolutionner l’éducation et de créer un système éducatif personnalisé, adaptatif et interactif pour chaque apprenant. L’UNTE est fidèle à sa mission quant à la promotion de l’usage pédagogique du numérique et à la participation dans l’élaboration des orientations de la politique numérique éducative et des stratégies pédagogiques innovantes de l’Université afin de développer un environnement numérique propice à l’enseignement et à l’apprentissage. C’est dans ce sens que cette rencontre qui va du terrain par des exemples concrets à travers le retour d’expériences des enseignants à travers cet échange de pratiques, les participants ont profité des expérimentations de leurs pairs pour se lancer dans cette aventure numérique et les autres se sont encouragés à utiliser de façon plus précise et ciblée cet outil et de tirer le meilleur profit suite aux commentaires et conseils de leurs collègues.
The meeting ended with a series of recommendations to better support teachers in this fairly rapid digital transition which has been qualified by UNESCO as the fourth industrial revolution with the appearance of AI. The University should reflect on the governance, the engineering of the training and the methods of evaluation and the mediators, guides will perhaps have to coach the members of the community so that everyone can give the best of themselves, at the educational and digital level and also relaunch his human career.

During the one-hour discussion, participants explored the potential of artificial intelligence in educational settings, its strength, weakness, risks, opportunities and its applications in a variety of fields. They discussed topics such as how AI can be used to improve student performance, how AI can support personalized learning for students, and how AI can be used to create more efficient and effective learning systems.
Participants discussed the challenges of integrating AI into the existing educational systems and the importance of addressing the ethical considerations of implementing AI in the classroom, such as privacy concerns and the potential for bias in AI-driven decision-making. Questions revolved around how AI can be integrated into the classroom to enhance learning, such as through adaptive learning tools and personalized learning experiences

In conclusion, artificial intelligence offers a unique opportunity to revolutionize education and create a personalized, adaptive and interactive educational system for each learner. The UNTE is faithful to its mission regarding the promotion of the pedagogical use of digital technology and participation in the development of the orientations of the digital educational policy and innovative pedagogical strategies of the University in order to develop a favorable digital environment to teaching and learning. It is in this sense that this meeting, which goes from the field through concrete examples through the feedback of teachers through this exchange of practices, the participants took advantage of the experiments of their peers to embark on this digital adventure and the others encouraged themselves to use this tool in a more precise and targeted way and to make the most of the comments and advice of their colleagues.
