Considering the expansion of active pedagogies that take into account student-centered learning, their role during the complete process cannot be overlooked. That implies a change in the teacher’s role from a communicator of the student’s mark to an open system in which teachers and students get involved in the learning process and develop alternative assessment skills.
Within this context and the framework of ensuring all individuals feel valued, respected, and treated fairly, the New Educational Technologies Unit (UNTE) held a 3-day virtual training on 10, 12, and 17 January 2023 addressed by Dr. Eliana El-Khoury, Assistant Professor at Athabasca University in Canada specializing in open, digital and distance education to highlight Alternative Assessment and E-portfolio and demonstrate their role in transforming education.
The training brought together more than 15 participants involved in technology implementation in Saint Joseph University, and provided a discussion on alternative assessment which focuses on concepts such as definitions of alternative assessment; e-assessment delivery platforms; benefits and challenges and principles of alternative assessment.
Day 1- January 10, 2023 - Introduction to alternative assessment; Dr. El-Khoury introduced the topic to participants and presented a definition to alternative assessment that is a learning non-traditional assessment method that focuses on the individual needs and growth of each student. She also gave a list of examples of alternative assessment tools: Videos, Blogs, timelines, audiovisual recordings, online exhibitions, Podcasts, Digital Storytelling, Digital Books, Concept Maps and more.

Day 2 - January 12, 2023; alternative assessment practical examples; In a participatory atmosphere, teachers were invited to get involved in activities to change traditional assessment methods and apply more diverse approaches to improve overall assessment. Dr. El-Khoury encouraged educators to create a blog, a timeline and a podcast in order to position themselves at the heart of alternative assessments. The participants were divided into working groups during which they exchanged experiences around assessments, examples and tools. Discussions meetings revealed that a great number of teachers are already using alternative methods in their teaching activities without knowing it is alternative assessment.

Day 3 - January 17, 2023 - E-portfolio; During this session, Dr. El-Khoury explained the purpose of the electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) that is a collection of sample students’ work, demonstrations, and artifacts that showcase their learning progression, achievement, and evidence. Discussions revolved around e-portfolios or digital dossiers which constitute an electronic form of the traditional paper portfolios. They are generated in computer settings and can include information in multiple formats such as text, video and audio. They require the active engagement of students and provide a depiction of their skills and learning. They can be digitally stored and can serve various assessment purposes. E-portfolios have the ability to easily collect and aggregate the data a student enters in one place for easier curation, access and scalability.

The creation and management of an e-portfolio provides students with opportunities to build digital fluency, using technologies to create, select, organize, edit, record, store, share and evaluate their work.
At the end of the workshop, participants were asked to evaluate the 3 days of work. Dr. El-Khoury invited them to summarize the training outcomes, share their insights and communicate strengths and weaknesses. All participants expressed complete satisfaction with the new tools and the way in which the workshop was run by mixing theory and practice. Moreover, they wanted to deepen their knowledge of digital technology and called on the UNTE to organize training workshops in the coming weeks acknowledging all the efforts exerted by its team members.
