Dans le cadre de la conférence internationale EFAI25 – Engineering the Future with Artificial Intelligence, organisée par la École supérieure d’ingénieurs de Beyrouth (ESIB), Madame Wadad Wazen Gergy, Directrice du Centre de l’Innovation Numérique et de l’Intelligence Artificielle (CINIA) à l’USJ, a offert une intervention remarquée le vendredi 21 juin, intitulée : « Upskilling for an AI World: A Human-Centered AI Journey at USJ ».

Avec émotion et conviction, Mme Wazen Gergy a retracé le parcours de l’Université Saint-Joseph dans son appropriation progressive et responsable de l’intelligence artificielle. Forte de ses 27 ans au sein de l’institution, elle a témoigné de l’évolution stratégique de l’USJ, depuis l’introduction de ChatGPT jusqu’à la création de cellules de veille, d’outils pédagogiques, et de formations internes ayant touché des centaines de membres du corps académique et administratif.

Plus qu’une simple adoption technologique, c’est une véritable vision humaniste de l’IA qui se dessine à travers ses propos. À l’USJ, l’intelligence artificielle n’est ni crainte ni idolâtrée : elle est pensée, façonnée et déployée au service de l’humain, avec une priorité accordée à l’inclusion, à l’éthique et à la pertinence contextuelle.

Madame Wazen Gergy a mis en avant les projets interdisciplinaires qui incarnent cette démarche : du diagnostic médical assisté par IA à la protection environnementale, en passant par l’agriculture intelligente et les modèles linguistiques plurilingues pour la santé. Elle a également présenté des outils créés à l’USJ par et pour sa communauté, tels que le Smart Grading System ou les chatbots académiques, qui illustrent une intelligence artificielle co-construite, ancrée dans les besoins du terrain.

Enfin, elle a souligné l’importance de l’ouverture au-delà du campus, avec des formations accessibles à tous via USJOnline et le lancement du diplôme AI for Everyone, porté par ESIB et CINIA.

L’intervention de Madame Wadad Wazen Gergy a incarné l’esprit de la conférence : une technologie tournée vers l’avenir, mais résolument centrée sur l’humain. Une démarche qui positionne l’USJ comme un acteur de référence dans le développement d’une IA éthique, inclusive et transformatrice.

As part of the international conference EFAI25 – Engineering the Future with Artificial Intelligence, organized by the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (ESIB), Mrs. Wadad Wazen Gergy, Director of the Center for Digital Innovation and Artificial Intelligence (CINIA) at USJ, delivered a powerful keynote on Friday, June 21st, titled: « Upskilling for an AI World: A Human-Centered AI Journey at USJ. »

With emotion and conviction, Mrs. Wazen Gergy traced the Saint Joseph University of Beirut’s progressive and responsible approach to adopting artificial intelligence. Drawing on her 27 years of experience within the institution, she outlined USJ’s strategic evolution — from the introduction of ChatGPT to the creation of AI monitoring cells, pedagogical tools, and internal training sessions that have reached hundreds of faculty and staff members.

More than a simple technological shift, her address revealed a genuine human-centered vision of AI. At USJ, artificial intelligence is neither feared nor blindly embraced; it is thoughtfully examined, shaped, and deployed in service of humanity, with a clear focus on inclusion, ethics, and contextual relevance.

Mrs. Wazen Gergy highlighted several interdisciplinary projects that reflect this approach, from AI-assisted medical diagnostics to environmental protection, smart agriculture, and multilingual language models designed for healthcare. She also presented tools developed at USJ by and for its community, such as the Smart Grading System and academic chatbots, concrete examples of co-constructed AI, grounded in real needs on the ground.

She also emphasized the importance of opening access beyond the campus, with inclusive training opportunities through USJOnline and the launch of the AI for Everyone diploma, jointly led by ESIB and CINIA.
